Glass in Our Lives
By Justyna Bialas of Glamorous Glass
The term “glass” means transparent, lustrous substance and originates from the Germanic word. The term was developed in the late Roman Empire, in Trier (the Roman glass-making centre, today Germany). Glass as a material has been used for the last few thousand years. Tradition of glass making is pretty long then. Today, we all have glass products in our homes and we use them on an everyday basis to serve food, decorate our homes or as gifts for our family and friends. It is impossible to indicate all areas in which glass is used nowadays and all kinds of product being made of glass. I'm personally interested in glass as a gentle material which can be used in home decoration. Unique glass pieces used as home accessories or gifts, such as glass vases or decorative bowls are often inexpensive but effective in amending a climate of a home. Today's glass artists and glass works create artistic vases, bowls, sculptures, etc. bringing to our homes distinctiveness, functionality and decoration. Elaborate centerpieces can be utilized in a variety of ways and settings. When placed in direct sun, these pieces will amaze you with a rainbow of colours enlightening the room. Unfortunately, not everything claimed to be artistic is an original work of art. We can easily become deceived by cheap copies of so called “artistic” glass pieces if we don not educate ourselves before making the purchase. For example, you can easily find glass pieces described as “Murano glass vases” or “Murano bowls”. Very often they are in fact not original products from Murano-they do not originate from Murano Island (Italy), they represent lower quality and can be purchased for lower prices. Another highly abused term is "Bohemian glass". Sometimes so called Bohemian glass vases or figurines are manufactured on a massive scale in various countries (usually Asia), but the Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic. To avoid buying items which only claim to be authentic, always check if your supplier can provide you with a certificate of authenticity of a product you are interested in.
