Glass in Simple Terms
By Justyna Bialas of Glamorous Glass
We don't think a lot about glass. We simply get it for granted. However, we use it everyday. Vases, plates, bowls, candle holders, less often-paperweights; all beautifully coloured or made of fused glass of various shades. But what is glass? I will not be talking here about physical and chemical characteristics of glass. I'm just a laick fascinated with the beauty and functionality of this special material. Anyway, glass as a final product, as we all know, is solid, but before becoming a vase or a bowl, it is silicate sand melted with alcalic additives. In smarter words, glass is a silicon dioxide (70-75%) melted with sodium or potassium oxide in a temperature of 1300-1500 C. Adding calcium oxide stabilizes the whole structure. Rapid cooling of this liquid compound leads to a creation of glass. Properties of glass change depending on what it is composed of. For example, we can get soda glass which is soft and plastic and slow change in its structure when becoming solid allows it to be shaped into a variety of forms. On the other hand, potash glass is much harder, and it used to be used for green forest glass and crystal glass.
