History of Glass Making from the 100s AD to Nowadays

By Justyna Bialas of Glamorous Glass

These were the Romans who spread their glass making technology across Europe. They laid the foundations for developing glass work traditions in France, Germany and other European countries. The Romans were also first who began using glass in architecture around 100 AD.

The Romans had a significant impact on developing new technologies in glass making so when their Empire started to decline, the progress in glass making also began to slow down.

Between the 7th and 8th century there was a transition from ancient to the Middle Age ways of producing glass. In the 10th century soda glass was replaced with potash from the burning trees. This was the Middle Age era when Venice stepped into a spotlight as a main actor in making glass. In 1271 the Venetian Republic introduced a ban on importing foreign glass and glass artists to Venice. The year of 1291 was a milestone in Italian glass tradition as the Venetian Republic ordered to move glass furnaces from Venice to Murano. In the second half of the 15th century quartz and potash made of sea plants was introduced in the Murano glass making world.

Beginning in 1688, mirrors started to be produced due to a new process of production plate glass introduced by the French.

Evolution and transition of glass making from crafts to industry started in the 19th century. Friedrich Siemens introduced tank furnaces which allowed to produce glass items on a massive scale.

In the 20th century, along with the technological revolution machines replaced traditional mouth blowing.

Nowadays, classical man-made glassblowing is an art. The artists maintain the tradition and knowledge of ancient glassblowers. Although they still utilize basic blowpipes, now they have a variety of supplementary tools which help when creating new pieces of glass art.
