The Most Common Techniques to Produce Glass Art

By Justyna Bialas of Glamorous Glass

There is a number of techniques which are used when producing artistic glass products. Here are some of the most common ones:
1) Blowing: blown glass is the most known and appreciated among various types of glass. Glass blowing is an art which involves a glassblower working at a furnace where molten glass is located. Using metal rods and hand tools, he/ she blows and shapes any form of glass.
2) Kiln-casting: this technique involves an artist making a mould out of refractory, sand, or plaster and silica. It is then filled with clear, coloured or patterned glass. The furnace or a kiln is used.
3) Fusing, slumping: glass is only heated to such a degree which allows to impress a shape or texture onto the piece or to stick a few pieces of glass together without using glue.
4) Flame working: the artist works at a bench. By using rods and tubes of glass, he/ she shapes glass with hand tools to create a piece of art.

The most common glass objects are vessels such as bowls, glass vases, bottles, paperweights, beads, sculptures and installation art.

I am a flameworker with no time lately, but I live near Corning Museum of Glass and glass has my heart. I love visiting and seeing the amazing exhibits. Sometimes I catch a show on TV with one of their glass artisans. Their work and techniques are stunning.
